Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture is generally considered to be very safe when performed by an experienced, well-trained practitioner using sterile needles. Fortunately, Dr. Naylor has nearly 45 years of experience in acupuncture, and holds a National Certification to practice acupuncture.
However, the 3 most common minor adverse events include:
- Minor bleeding
- Bruising or hematoma development at the needle site
- Dizziness or needle sickness (may be due to deficiencies in the patient and not necessarily a result of treatment)
As previously mentioned, these risks are slight and can be avoided through proper training and credentialing of acupuncture practitioners.
Science of Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves inserting and manipulating filiform needles into designated points on the body to not only treat pain and disease, but to also restore health, protect the body against infections, and regulate various physiological functions. Although a conclusion has not been reached on precisely how this works, we do know that when the needles are inserted at the designated points, endorphins are increased in the body, which is a chemical similar to morphine. In various studies over the years, acupuncture has been found to be highly effective.
Acupuncture has been practiced in the USA for more than 150 years but it was not until President Nixon returned from his trip to China in the 70’s that there was a boom in popularity. In 1971, New York Times political analyst, James Reston had an appendectomy in Beijing using ONLY acupuncture for anesthesia and to reduce pain post-surgically with moxa (Chinese herb often burned over specific needle points or on top of the needle).

Here's What to Expect
In the initial evaluation and treatment, Dr. Naylor will walk you through each step that takes place, ensuring that you have a thorough understanding of the treatment and answering all questions you may have. During the procedure, acupuncture needles will be strategically placed in areas of your body, according to your specific needs. Because the needles are very thin, the insertion usually causes little to no discomfort. Some individuals don’t even feel them being inserted at all.
During the insertion, you may experience Qi. Qi is the energy that travels through the body via the meridian system. There are many forms of Qi, but da Qi is the sensation most commonly felt during the insertion of needles in an Acupuncture treatment session.
After sitting with the needles for about 10 to 20 minutes, the needles will be removed. Usually, there is no discomfort when this occurs. After the procedure, you may feel relaxed, energized, relieved, or how you felt prior to the procedure.
